Eight-year-olds now have iPhones and grandparents who had never learned how to use the Internet until recently are now tweeting each other to brag about the new apps they just downloaded to their Android phone. Everywhere we look these days, it seems that everyone around us is staring down at a smartphone.

We may have already grown accustomed to people texting away on conventional mobile phones while driving, riding the subway, walking down the street or sitting in a meeting, but now that smartphones have taken hold, all of that texting has been joined with watching YouTube videos, updating Facebook statuses, posting tweets on Twitter, shopping, searching the Internet and using apps that allow them to play a quick game or basically carry their office with them in the palm of their hand.
